Comments -- First described by Branson and Mehl in 1933, this distinctive element in frequently the largest and most impressive in collections from the Middle and Late Ordovician. Needle-sharp and slender, this flattened element suggests an aggressive predator. The cusp has few structural details to help in more detailed classification, and several have suggested variation in this element type suggests the name may include many species. Little additional information is available about this fascinating player in the history of early life.
